FREDERICTON, NEW BRUNSWICK
TRUNK SYSTEMS

There are two known 800 MHz trunk systems in Fredericton.  One is a commercial system and the other is the City of Fredericton's municipal system.  There is also a conventional 800 MHz non-trunked repeater operated  by Eastern  Communications.

1. Municipal System.

THIS SYSTEM IS ACTUALLY A THREE SITE COMPONENT OF THE NOVA SCOTIA TRUNKED MOBILE RADIO SYSTEM (TMR).  Facilities are provided and operated by Bell (Aliant Telecoms).  The frequencies used are the same as are used at TMR sites in NS.   Units which customarily use TMR sites in Nova Scotia have been heard using the Fredericton sites, and Fredericton units could do the reverse.  Companies active in both provinces have been heard on the Fredericton sites and on Nova Scotia sites.    It would be very easy for the Fredericton Police to have direct communications with Halifax Police, for example, if that was desired; however it is not thought that any HPD tg is currently programmed into the FPD consoles, or vice versa.

The three sites are not simulcast but the traffic is for the most part identical as various units on any talkgroup are often affiliated to all three sites.   If any one site is to be monitored it should be Maryland Hill as it would carry virtually all the Fredericton traffic.

Associated 800 MHz non-trunked frequencies

The city of Fredericton also has a number of conventional frequencies that are associated with the municipal trunk.  By that I mean that these frequencies are in the same radios as the trunk talkgroups, listed as channels, and for the users of no difference. In most cases their specific usage is not known and may be used for paging, for vehicular repeaters or for short range use.   I-Tac and I-Call channels are in both fire and police units.   Presumably there would be a police simplex not yet known, but that thought is purely speculative.

In case of a breakdown of the trunk system there is a failsoft system which causes all city units to go to one of two conventional repeaters so that there is no confusion and all units can still communicate.   It is possible also in a breakdown for units to use site trunking.  Site trunking means that trunking or sharing of frequencies still happens but the sites are isolated from each other.  Generally speaking, in a situation where there is more than one site in use by a particular agency it is better to go to conventional repeater(s) on one frequency, so that as much as possible all can continue to hear each other.  In Fredericton's case it is not known whether the failsoft conventional repeaters are single-site on the tower with the best coverage, or on all three sites but on the same frequency.

Please note that the city consoles have all the municipal talkgroups and channels, so that the police dispatcher can use transit or fire talkgroups if necessary, and vice versa.    Dispatch also has VHF and UHF consoles for contact with Provincial Ambulance, EMO, etc.
